In 2016, according to a survey by human resource firm Investors in People, 1 in 3 workers claimed they were unhappy at work. 2017 saw an improvement, but 1 in 4 still aren’t happy in their work.
Keeping a smile on the faces of staff is more important than some might think. They are the driving force of your business and the reason you make a profit!
Looking after them doesn’t take much, so below we’re going to explore just a handful of really simple ways to make sure staff feel wanted and secure.
Keep Them Fed and Watered
We are a nation of tea drinkers, and although you would think coffee would win out; 37% of us have 5-6 different types of tea at home or at work. That’s a lot of variety!

Bearing this in mind, you need to make sure you’re offering tea, coffee, hot chocolate and squash to all of your employees. You also need to make sure there are plenty of nibbles to be had around the office, for hungry staff.
However, you must be careful what you’re feeding your staff. Did you know that the average Scottish woman eats an extra 100,000 calories every year at work? That’s the equivalent of over 500 double decker burgers!
Making sure there are plenty of healthy snacks laying around not only helps staff to reach their 5 a day fruit and veg intake, but eating healthier is also proven to reduce stress levels and release endorphins.
Healthy workers (with tea/coffee in hand) are happy workers!
Take Them Out Of The Office
Research suggests that employee disengagement costs the UK economy £340bn annually. Knowing when staff are not themselves and when they need a break is crucial to running your business successfully.

The research above proves that employees who are not engaged in their work can cost you and the economy. Simply taking them away from their desks every so often can help boost productivity.
A worrying ⅓ of UK workers don’t even take a lunch break, staying at their desks for 8+ hours at a time. With another 50% only taking part of their break to stop and eat/unwind.
As a result, this increases stress levels among staff which hampers productivity in the workplace. Just taking staff out for lunch or a beverage once in a blue moon can improve employer-employee relationships and increase overall productivity.
Who would have thought going out for a pint could boost business?
Give The Occasional Bonus or Pay Rise
A survey (of over 2,000 employees) found that 40% planned to leave their jobs due to lack of pay. And with a prediction of a 0.7% fall in pay in 2018, it’s no wonder employees are looking at other options.

You need to make sure you’re paying your staff correctly, based on their skills (and not their job title). Ensuring those who work hard are paid fairly is the best way to retain staff.
Did you know that almost 20% of all UK workers don’t earn enough to pay tax? This means that less goes to the economy and employees are left feeling underpaid and undervalued. Nobody wins.
Giving out the occasional bonus or pay rise to your staff shows them your ongoing commitment towards them. Furthermore, it also shows you care about them and want to keep them around, making them feel valued.
Tip: Pay rises should be offered to all staff, not just a select few, and be a percentage increase.
Thank Them For Their Hard Work

Research by OnePoll revealed that 16% of workers had never been thanked for their work. If that wasn’t shocking enough, only 1 in 5 employees hears the phrase once a month maximum.
Consequently, in the very same pole, 38% of workers said that a simple thank you means more than a promotion to them. This shows just how powerful one word, or phrase, can really be in the workplace.
Always make sure to say thank you for all that your employees do for you, and most importantly… mean it!
